The sacred memorial complex of Hazrat Kusam ibn Abbas (RA), first cousin of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who brought the light of Islam to Central Asia during the Caliphate of Mu'awiya and was martyred outside Samarkand in 57 AH.
Detailed Historical Chronicle & Foundations
Kusam ibn Abbas was the son of Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib and Lubaba bint al-Harith, bearing a striking resemblance to the Holy Prophet ﷺ. He traveled with Said ibn Uthman to Transoxiana. The Quranic verse "And think not of those killed in the cause of Allah as dead; rather they are living with their Lord" (3:169) is inscribed in golden thuluth script over his tomb, giving rise to the Persian title "Shah-i Zinda" (The Living King). The surrounding mausoleum avenue was built by Amir Timur (Tamerlane) and his family.
