Detailed Historical Chronicle & Foundations
Built over the Cave of Machpelah, the massive stone outer walls date back over two millennia. Following the Islamic liberation of Palestine under Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab in 15 AH (638 CE), it was consecrated as a grand mosque. Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayyubi installed the legendary carved cedarwood Minbar in 1187 CE (crafted by Nur al-Din Zangi), which remains one of the greatest masterpieces of Islamic woodwork intact in the world today.
