Born in Marwand (modern Afghanistan) c. 1177 CE, Syed Usman descended from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq. He was a contemporary and close spiritual companion of Bahauddin Zakariya of Multan, Baba Farid Ganjshakar of Pakpattan, and Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari of Uch Sharif (the famed "Chaar Yaar" or Four Friends). He traveled through Mecca, Medina, and Baghdad before making his permanent abode in Sehwan, Sindh. The shrine was originally commissioned by Sultan Firuz Shah Tughluq and rebuilt with intricate Sindhi Kashi tiles and gold plating.
