The sacred sanctuary of Hazrat Sheikh Shah Jalal al-Yamani (RA), who migrated from Yemen across India with 360 companions, arrived in Sylhet in 1303 CE, and established Islamic faith, social welfare, and spiritual enlightenment across eastern Bengal.

Born in Konya or Hadhramaut in 670 AH (1271 CE), Shah Jalal was given a handful of soil by his uncle and instructed to settle wherever he found soil matching its color and fragrance. Traveling through Delhi, he was gifted a pair of sacred blue rock pigeons by Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (the descendants of which still populate the shrine as "Jalali Kobutor"). In 1303 CE he settled in Sylhet, which matched the soil. Ibn Battuta visited him personally in 1345 CE and recorded his extraordinary piety in the Rihla.
