Born in Gilan (1077 CE / 470 AH), Sheikh Abdul Qadir studied Hanbali jurisprudence in Baghdad under Abu Sa’d al-Mubarak al-Mukharrimi and hadith under prominent masters. For twenty-five years he lived in the desert outside Baghdad in ascetic retreat. Upon his return, his Friday discourses at the Bab al-Azaj madrasa attracted tens of thousands of students, scholars, and caliphs. His sermons are recorded in Al-Fath al-Rabbani and Futuh al-Ghayb. The Qadiri order founded through his lineage is today the most widespread spiritual order across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia.
