Historical Overview & Significance

The sacred sanctuary of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, fourth Rightly-Guided Caliph, and supreme source of spiritual lineage for virtually all classical Sufi orders.

Detailed Historical Chronicle & Foundations

Following his martyrdom in 40 AH (661 CE) at Kufa, Imam Ali was laid to rest at Najaf al-Ashraf. The earliest formal dome was constructed by Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid in 786 CE, and later magnificently enlarged by the Buyid ruler Adud al-Dawla, and Shah Abbas I. Scholars such as Sheikh al-Tusi founded the Hawza Ilmiyya of Najaf adjacent to this sacred complex, which remains the oldest ongoing Islamic seminary in the world.
