Born Syarif Hidayatullah in 1448 CE to a noble lineage tracing back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he studied in Makkah, Baghdad, and Pasai before settling on the slopes of Mount Jati in Cirebon. He founded the Islamic Sultanates of Cirebon and Banten. His approach respected local Sundanese and Javanese traditions while establishing Islamic courts, mosques, and irrigation works.
