Detailed Historical Chronicle & Foundations
Born in Balkh (1207 CE), Rumi migrated westward with his family escaping the Mongol invasions, eventually settling in Konya, capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. A distinguished Islamic jurist and theologian, his spiritual life transformed upon meeting the itinerant dervish Shams-i Tabrizi in 1244 CE. After Shams’s departure, Rumi composed the Mathnawi (26,000 verses in six volumes) and the Diwan-e-Shams. His tomb, completed in 1274 under Seljuk architect Badr al-Din Tabrizi, remains one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Islamic world.
