CLASSICAL FIQH PROTOCOL

Salatul Janazah (The Funeral Prayer)

صَلَاةُ الْجَنَازَة (أَرْبَعُ تَكْبِيرَات)

A communal obligation (Fard Kifayah) performed entirely standing upright with 4 Takbeers. There is no Ruku and no Sujud.

Prescribed Sunnah Guidelines

1Imam stands at the chest of a deceased male, or at the middle/waist of a deceased female.
21st Takbeer: Say "Allahu Akbar", fold hands, and recite Surah Al-Fatiha in a low voice.
32nd Takbeer: Say "Allahu Akbar" and recite Durood Ibrahim (the same blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ as in regular prayer).
43rd Takbeer: Say "Allahu Akbar" and make the comprehensive authentic Dua for the deceased.
54th Takbeer: Say "Allahu Akbar", pause briefly making Dua for the living, then conclude with Taslim ("As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah") to the right.
Authentic Prophetic Supplication

"Allahummagh-fir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa sagheerina wa kabeerina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'alal-Iman."

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever You keep alive among us, keep him alive upon Islam; and whomever You cause to die among us, cause him to die upon faith.

Condolence (Ta'ziyah) Manners

  • • Offer comforting condolences within 3 days without burdening the family.
  • • Sunnah to prepare and deliver meals to the deceased's household ("Make food for the family of Ja'far, for there has come upon them that which occupies them").
  • • Say: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. A'zamAllahu ajrak, wa ahsana 'aza'ak, wa ghafara li-mayyitik."

Cemetery (Ziyarat al-Qubur) Sunnah

  • • Say upon entering graveyard: "As-salamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu'mineena wal-muslimeen..."
  • • Visiting graves is Sunnah as it softens the heart and reminds of the Hereafter (Muslim 976).
  • • Strictly prohibited to sit on, step over, or build lavish structures directly atop graves.
